Kohlert serial numbers

Graslitz woodwinds, saxophones and bassoons from one bench.

The Kohlert workshop in Graslitz built clarinets, saxophones and bassoons; after the war the firm moved to Winnenden. The archive carries the SaxPics chart (1901–1977) and the stencil trade that complicates badging.

SaxPics publishes the Kohlert chart for all models, 1901 to 1977. Kohlert also made bassoons and stencils (e.g. for H.N. White and for Selmer London's 'Best in the World'), which share the same sequence.

Codes, eras and engraving

Badge text and the stencil trade — about 1880-1970

Era and resolver layer only: the badge names the maker behind a stencil, and the number is matched to the Kohlert ranges in serial-ranges.json.

Kohlert badge / stencil carrying another seller's nameKohlert numbers also appear on horns sold under other badges, so the same instrument can be listed under a stencil name.

Questions

Can this archive date Kohlert instruments from the serial number?

Yes — the archive covers 1 numbering sequence(s) and 74 dating ranges from 1901 to 1977, compiled from published maker records and reference charts. Every answer states its source and confidence.

Where is the serial number on a Kohlert instrument?

For Bassoons the common location is on the boot (butt) joint cap or the wing joint — Heckel stamps it under the boot cap.

What if my Kohlert serial number is not found?

Recheck the characters exactly as marked, including any letters. Letter prefixes often belong to student or stencil lines. Some periods may not be covered yet — every refusal here says why.
